New mental health hospital to open in North Carolina

In a place where the population has doubled since 1990, the access to mental health treatment services has decreased two-fold, and a new mental health hospital hasn't opened in the entire state for decades, changes are being made. According to WBTV in Charlotte, N.C., a new mental health facility will open its doors on Monday. 

Carolinas Healthcare, which has inpatient, outpatient, school-based, crisis and residential treatment programs, will open a new facility in Davidson.

The new behavioral health campus cost $36 million and took about a year to complete. 

According to the article:

"This building was designed to be an inviting, warm, empowering, aesthetically-pleasing, stress-reducing environment to really normalize the fact that an illness is an illness and one can recover," says Vice President and Facility Executive Dr. Tom Gettelman.

Charlotte Business Journal says that the new facility, which lies on 22 acres, includes a 66-bed, 67,280-square-foot inpatient hospital and a 10,000-square-foot medical-office building for outpatient care.

The new Davidson facility will employ about 150 full-time employees, including physicians, psychologists and therapists, according to Charlotte Business Journal.
