DC Navy Yard shooter lied about mental health issues
Weeks prior to the tragedy, a doctor claimed that there were no mental health issues to be found for Aaron Alexis, the individual who shot and killed 12 people at the D.C. Navy Yard in September.
However, recent reports from the AP, which obtained more than 100 pages of documents detailing treatment and disability claims over a two-year period, show that Alexis lied to Veterans Affairs doctors in order to get a clean bill and continue forward with his plan.
It seems that the 34-year-old had multiple disturbing incidents related to mental health issues and the police. In one instance, Alexis reported to police that he heard voices coming from a microwave in his hotel room.
He also saw doctors on multiple occasions and complained of insomnia. Doctors asked questions about flashbacks, stress levels, and possible available weapons -- all of which he answered in a way that made the doctor state, "No problem there."
The Washington Post reported:
Congress and the Pentagon are investigating the shootings, including whether faulty security clearance procedures allowed him to get and maintain his job. Some lawmakers have said Alexis fell through the cracks at the VA and should have been treated by mental health professionals, but they have stopped short of specifying what government doctors should have done differently.
