CMS posts inpatient psychiatric hospital quality data

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) added a comparison tool to consumers evaluating inpatient psychiatric hospitals. The quality-related data reported, which is reported to CMS through its Inpatient Psychiatric Facility Quality Reporting program, allows consumers to compare hours of physical restraint use, seclusion use, creation of a post discharge continuing care plan, and transmission of the care plan to the follow-up care provider on discharge.

Facilities eligible for the program are required to report data on the measures; Failure to report data can result in reductions to Medicare payments.

For this posting, CMS has suppressed data related to patients discharged on multiple antipsychotic medications and has provided more details about the measures.

The data is available in tables with facility (provider) resultsstate results, and national results. The datasets can be downloaded here.
