City of San Francisco to Acquire Two Struggling Residential Facilities

The city of San Francisco is purchasing Grove Street House and South Van Ness Manor, a pair of residential facilities at risk of closing, according to a Bay City News Services report. The decision was announced by Mayor London Breed and city Supervisor Rafael Mandelman.

In January, San Francisco financed a deal for Grove Street House, a nine-bed residential mental health treatment facility. The deal was funded by a $3.94 million loan from the mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development, and includes $675,000 for repairs.

The 29-bed South Van Ness was slated to close in October, but the city is now in negotiations to buy the property.

"The Grove Street House and South Van Ness Manor provide essential care for some of our most vulnerable residents—people with mental health challenges and substance abuse disorders, and people who are looking for a step on the path out of homelessness," Breed said in a statement.

A representative for the mayor’s office tells Bay City News Service that the city is seeking additional long-term facilities at risk of closing and in need of financial backing.
