Pharmacy Chain Offering Options for Safe Prescription Medication Disposal

Tom Valentino, Senior Editor

To help its customers safely get rid of leftover and expired prescription medications, Publix Pharmacy announced recently that it is installing drug disposal kiosks at select locations in 5 states.

At all of its stores, the company is also offering free drug disposal packets to customers who receive an opioid prescription for less than 28 days or for all other prescriptions by request. When contents of the packet are mixed with water in a prescription bottle, the medication is rendered inactive, and the bottle and its contents can be put in the trash.

According to data from the 2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, friends and relatives remained the most common source for prescription pain relievers that were misused, as 47.2% of users reported being given, buying from or stealing the medications from those close to them.
