NFL, Players Association Seek Applicants for Grants to Study Pain Treatment

Tom Valentino, Senior Editor

The NFL and its Players Association announced this week that their joint Pain Management Committee is seeking proposals for grants to fund studies that will inform the committee on pain management and treatment options, including the use of cannabis.

The RFP focuses on three areas of inquiry:

  • The effects of cannabinoids on pain in players, both post-surgery and/or in daily pain management
  • The effects of non-pharmacologic treatments for pain (post-surgical and/or daily)
  • The effects of cannabis or cannabinoids on athletic performance in players

The league said in a news release that it will fund up to 5 pilot research proposals “from leading investigative teams in the fields of pain management and the effects of cannabinoids on athletic performance in elite football players,” with an anticipated $1 million total funding to be available.

Proposals can be submitted to the league by completing a form on its website by 6 p.m. ET on July 31.
