VCU expert on genetic and environmental factors wins international award
Kenneth S. Kendler, MD, professor of psychiatry at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), has been awarded the Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health from the National Academy of Medicine for his research on genetic and environmental roles in the development of substance use disorders and mental illness.
Kendler, who has been on the VCU staff since 1983, has focused during his career on the relationship among biological, psychological and social contributors to substance use and psychiatric disorders. Co-recipient of the award with Kendler is Kay Jamison, MD, professor of mood disorders at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Kendler this summer co-published research offering the first scientific evidence of risk genes for depression.
