Treatment guide for pregnant women includes medication information
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) this week released Clinical Guidance for Treating Pregnant and Parenting Women with Opioid Use Disorder and Their Infants, which discusses a variety of scenarios that treatment professionals face in working with mothers and infants.
The guide includes detailed information on evidence-based treatment options for pregnant women with opioid use disorders, including methadone and buprenorphine treatment.
The publication contains four elements: clinical scenario; clinical action steps; supporting evidence and clinical considerations; and web resources.
SAMHSA officials state that the guidance “comes at a time of great need for effective opioid use disorder treatment. In 2016, over 20,000 pregnant women reported using heroin or misusing pain relievers in the past month.”
