SAMHSA guide advances strategies for transitioning offenders to community
A new guide from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) outlines tested strategies for successfully transitioning people wth substance use or mental health disorders from incarceration into the community.
Guidelines for Successful Transition of People with Mental or Substance Use Disorders from Jail and Prison: Implementation Guide, available online, promotes the “Assess, Plan, Identify and Coordinate” approach to identify evidence-based strategies for working with offenders.
A news release from SAMHSA states that this approach has been adopted statewide in New York, North Carolina and Hawaii, and also in local communities such as Allegheny County, Pa., Montgomery County, Md., and Pima County, Ariz.
