SAMHSA issues updated guide on biomarker use
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has issued a revised version of a treatment provider’s guide to the use and interpretation of biomarkers in monitoring alcohol use.
SAMHSA initially published the advisory “The Role of Biomarkers in the Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorders” in 2006. The publication reviews recent scientific information about biomarkers, which are physiological signs of alcohol exposure or ingestion.
The advisory examines the advantages and limitations of using various specific biomarkers, and looks at their applicability for clinical treatment programs, criminal justice settings and programs to treat and monitor impaired healthcare professionals.
