Rutter named director of NIDA behavioral research division
The acting director of the Division of Basic Neuroscience and Behavioral Research at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has been named director of the division, which supports research examining the neurobiological and behavioral mechanisms of drugs of abuse.
Joni Rutter, PhD, has been the division's acting director for the past three years. Among her roles with the federal agency, she has built and maintained the NIDA Genetics Consortium, made up of more than 20 researchers who focus on addiction genetics.
Areas covered in the Division of Basic Neuroscience and Behavioral Research's portfolio include the role of drug use in HIV/AIDS progression; the effects of chronic pain and its treatment on drug use and dependence; and the dynamics of gender differences in addiction.
Rutter, who has been with NIDA since 2003, has received numerous scientific achievement awards, including a Fellowship Achievement Award from the National Cancer Institute.
