Play about AA`s founders will debut Spanish version
The play “Bill W. and Dr. Bob,” chronicling the story of the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and their supportive wives, returns to an Off-Broadway stage next month with first-time performances in Spanish.
With previews beginning Jan. 8, the play will be presented with both English and Spanish performance dates. The effort is being undertaken under a partnership between the SoHo Playhouse in Manhattan and the NYU Langone Medical Center's Initiative on Alcoholism and its Treatment, in an attempt to bring a dialogue about addiction to a Latino audience.
The six-person cast (three Americans and three Costa Ricans) will deliver 16 New York City performances in English and six in Spanish. Half of the tickets will be given away to individuals in recovery and to NYU staff, faculty and students. Future performance runs will take place in Austin, Texas; Mexico City; and Costa Rica.
“Bill W. and Dr. Bob” enjoyed an 11-month run at the SoHo Playhouse in 2013-14.
