Nationally known researcher moves to NIDA
Carlos Blanco, MD, PhD, a professor of psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center and a national expert on the relationship between the epidemiology and treatment of addictions, will begin directing the National Institute on Drug Abuse's (NIDA's) Division of Epidemiology, Services, and Prevention Research on June 15.
The division supports research that addresses the patterns, causes and effects of substance use disorders and that ensures evidence-based approaches to prevention and treatment. Blanco will replace former division director Wilson Compton, MD, who is now NIDA's deputy director.
According to a news release from NIDA, Blanco's research accomplishments include a recent finding that individuals in recovery are not an increased risk of a new addiction. Other areas on which he has focused include a detailed look at the course and stages of substance use disorders. He also is an expert on co-occurrence of addiction with depressive and anxiety disorders.
