Marijuana breathalyzers coming soon to a roadside near you

Neuroscience researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm have concluded that exhaled breath can provide a high rate of detection for most commonly abused substances, much as it does now for alcohol.

In his blog, In Search of the Marijuana Breathalyzer, Dirk Hanson reviews progress of research by the researchers. He also reports that several North American companies have roadside drug breathalyzers in development stages ranging through to the prototype stage.

The market for marijuana—and other substance abuse—breathalyzers is heating up as a number of companies are primed to enter the market. A report from Lexington, Mass.-based Wintergreen Research predicts the global market for breathalyzers to hit $3.2B within the next four years.
