Florida outpatient provider arrested for alleged patient brokering

The ongoing enforcement effort against unethical business practices in South Florida's addiction treatment and recovery support industries last week targeted an outpatient provider accused of multiple violations of Florida's patient brokering law.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office on March 1 arrested Steven Johnson, owner of Palm Beach Recovery and Wellness in West Palm Beach and Reel Recovery in Palm Springs. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported that according to the arrest report, Johnson paid more than $95,000 to have residents of a Palm Beach County sober home be enrolled in outpatient treatment at his treatment facility.

The report added that the owner of the sober home, Alexander Vandevert of the Saje House home, was arrested in December and accused of accepting patient brokering fees.

County records indicate that Johnson faces 48 counts of violating the state's patient brokering law, the newspaper reported.
