Free day camp available to children of treatment clients

Clients of the Texas treatment facilities operated by The Right Step now have access to scholarships for their children to attend day camp while the parent is receiving treatment or after the parent’s discharge.

The Kids Camp at the Council program, affiliated with the Children’s Program at the Betty Ford Center, offers four days of activities for children ages 7 to 12. Activities include games, expressive art and role playing exercises, designed to assist the young people in developing self-care skills and in enhancing communication with their parents.

According to a news release from The Right Step, involving children in the recovery process helps them learn that addiction in the family is not their fault, and the teaching of coping skills offers them tools that will prove useful throughout their life.

The children may attend the free camp program, conducted in partnership with the Council on Alcohol and Drugs Houston, up to one year after the parent’s discharge. Children who complete the camp program also receive $25 from The Right Step.
