Former baseball player to open treatment center
Former Major League Baseball (MLB) player Darryl Strawberry has been working with the Missouri state health department and a healthcare company to open a drug and alcohol treatment center in Overland.
The healthcare company that he has been working with is Oglethorpe Inc., which is based in Florida. Oglethorpe opened the first Darryl Strawberry Recovery Center in Orlando in January. It also operates mental health facilities in Ohio, Texas and Louisiana.
An article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch shares that the new facility will have 44 beds in an inpatient psychiatric hospital and ten group homes that will house developmentally disabled individuals. The facility and group homes will be located on the property of the former state-run Northwest Habilitation Center that closed in 2012.

Renovations on the 22,000-square-foot facility are expected to cost $4.3 million.
Strawberry, 51, played for two MLB teams during his 17-year baseball career-- the New York Mets and the New York Yankees. He struggled with drug and alcohol addiction and served jail time before recovering. Today, he and his wife live in St. Peters where they are both ordained ministers.
