Eating disorders center establishes pre-teen unit

Stating that about one-third of its patients report onset of an eating disorder before age 12, St. Louis-based McCallum Place Eating Disorder Centers is establishing a Pre-Adolescent Unit for children ages 6 to 12. The unit, to be housed at the organization's St. Louis treatment site, is expected to open in July.

The program will offer residential and partial hospitalization services, with capacity to serve 12 young people at a time. McCallum Place also operates eating disorders treatment program sites in Columbia, Mo., and Kansas City.

“Early intervention and compassionate informed parent involvement is encouraged and provides the best chance for full recovery,” McCallum Place stated in a May 18 news release describing the new unit. “Nurturing treatment in children is modified with the pre-adolescent context and brain development in mind. Children admitted to the program will also be able to work with tutors to continue with school.”
