Connecticut targets youths in new opioid addiction program
A $3.1 million federal grant has allowed the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF) to launch a comprehensive program to assist young people ages 21 and under who are affected by the opioid crisis, state officials announced last week.
The Hartford Courant reported that the program, to be called the ASSERT Treatment Model, will offer family treatment, medications and recovery support to up to 94 young people at a time. Four community providers—The Wheeler Clinic, Community Health Resources, Connecticut Junior Republic and United Community and Family Services—will run the program.
“Until now, opioid treatment has been aimed at adults—largely ignoring the growing problem of heroin and prescription drug misuse among youth,” DCF Commissioner Joette Katz said in a statement. “We are working to change that in Connecticut by using federal funding in an innovative manner that holds real promise because our experience shows the treatments are effective.”
