HIDTA releases report on emerging threats

As part of its National Emerging Threats Initiative, the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) program this week shared a report that it hopes will further support the missions of HIDTA programs across the country in their respective areas of responsibility.

The report, titled Emerging Threats Report 2018: Status and Factors Affecting the United States, was presented by John Eadie, Public Health and Prescription Drug Monitoring Program project coordinator for the National Emerging Threat Initiative of the National HIDTA Program, at the National Cocaine, Meth & Stimulant Summit this week in Florida.

The document is also “designed to educate those outside of the HIDTA program concerning drug seizure information obtained as a result of the HIDTA program,” according to its executive summary.

Among the topics covered in the report:

  • Opioids, including heroin and prescription opioids
  • Stimulants, including cocaine, methamphetamine and combined stimulants
  • Demand for drugs, specifically opioids and stimulants
  • Supply and demand of opioids and stimulants
  • Drug-related deaths
