Crawford Long Hospital of Emory University Hosts RCIS Review Course

On April 26th and 27th, 2008, Crawford Long Hospital of Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, supported their cath lab staff by sponsoring a Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) Board Review Course. The program was coordinated through Shane Cole, RN, Cath Lab Educator, Cardiology Services, Crawford Long Hospital of Emory University. Forty-one cath lab professionals attended the two-day course.
The guest presenters were Marsha Holton, BS, RN, CCRN, RCIS, FSICP, Cardiovascular Orientation Programs, and Todd Ginapp, EMT-P, RCIS, FSICP, Cardiology Manager, Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital, Houston, Texas.
The accredited curriculum included:
• Basic Principles of Radiation Safety
• Basic Principles of Diagnostic Cardiac Catheterization Procedures
• Basic Principles of Interventional Cardiology Procedures
• Cardiac Anatomy and Physiology
• Cardiac Pathophysiology
• Cardiac Output Determinations I – Fick
• Cardiac Output Determinations II – Thermodilution
• Cath Lab Pharmacology – Part I
• Cath Lab Pharmacology – Part II
• Hemodynamic Calculations Review (e.g., Cardiac Index, SVR, PVR, Shunt Ratios, Valve Areas)
• Pressures and Waveforms Reviews
• Principles of Care for Invasive Cardiac Patients
• Valvular Disease Review (Congenital, Regurgitation, Stenosis)

The program was approved for 16 Category A credits by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) and 16 Category A credits by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT).
